Trauma Resiliency Immersive Adaptive Gaming Environment (TRIAGE)

Project Overview

Under contract W81XWH1910584 with the USA Medical Research Acquisition Activity, TRIAGE is developing advanced military medical training capabilities that combine stress modulation with immersive simulation technologies. The project focuses on enhancing medical care providers' performance through a systematic approach to stress inoculation and skills development.

Project Specific Aims

  • Aim 1: Develop parameterized scenarios that can be dynamically adjusted to modulate the delivery of stress during medical simulation
  • Aim 2: Build a proof-of-concept prototype simulation system that provides stressful medical simulation and enables measurement of the amount of stress experienced by the learner
  • Aim 3: Measure the change in performance both during and after training with the modulated stress and test the hypothesis that performance will improve along with resilience

Approach

TRIAGE combines confidence-building and skills-enhancement of deliberate training with the increased resiliency that comes with stress inoculation to improve the performance, adaptability, and agility of military medical care providers. The system provides an immersive, 3D virtual environment in combination with a physical environment populated by physical entities, needed for simulation for training of Roles 1-3. The environment exhibits situation fidelity and is extensible to incorporate higher-level medical skills training.
